Reseal a Skimmer Faceplate
Description
This lesson covers resealing an Aquascape skimmer faceplate. You will remove the existing plate, extract the factory aluminum anchors, and recinch the liner to the box with a new silicone bed and stainless through-bolts.
When the pond is already down for a leaking waterfall box, reseal the skimmer on the same visit. If the existing liner will not realign, overlay a new sheet before the silicone is applied.
Site Prep
- 🥾 Waders, and/or a pump to lower the water (or to work from inside the pond)
- 🪣 Buckets and tubs for fish and holding water
- 🪣 Pond vacuum or bailer for the skimmer and waterfall box
Removal and Cleaning
- 🔧 Channel-locks
- 🔧 Pliers
- 🪛 Screwdriver
- 🪥 Brush for packed-on buildup
Sealing
- 🧴 Silicone and a caulk gun
- 📄 Extra liner, in case the existing sheet will not realign
- 🧽 Sponge, paper towels, and primer
Hardware
- 🔩 1/4 in x 1 1/4 in stainless through-bolts, nuts, and back washers (replace all eight lower fasteners)
- 📸 Before photo of the frame rocks
Precautions
⏱️
Window
Apply the liner as soon as the bead is down. A thick bead begins to skin in about 60 seconds. Goal: all bolts and nuts seated in 3-5 minutes. If the bed skins, pull it and start over.
🪣
Staging
Lower the pond with a pump, or enter in waders. Fish and water go in tubs. Bail the skimmer and waterfall box before any hardware comes out.
📄
Liner
Carry extra liner. If the existing sheet will not realign, overlay a new sheet. Keep the liner folded off the bed until the first two bolts are through.
How It Works
How the Seal Holds
The faceplate cinches the liner to the box across a continuous silicone bed. That bed must fill every bolt hole and cover the full face of the opening. A gap at the joint or around a fastener is a leak.
Factory anchors are aluminum and sit in the wet zone. They corrode. On a reseal they are removed completely. Replacement hardware is a 1/4 in stainless through-bolt in a roughly 1/2 in hole, with a washer on the back of the faceplate so the head cannot recess into the opening.
Skimmer Faceplate
Reuse the top four screws if the heads are not stripped - they remain dry. Replace the eight in the wet zone. Weir click-in holes go on the bottom. With the weir removed, this is easy to invert.
Waterfall Overlay
Once the liner is peeled off a waterfall box, it often will not stretch back onto the face. Overlay a new liner so the new sheet is the sealing surface. Do not force the old sheet back into place.
Reference
Top 4 Screws
Remain above water. Reuse if the heads are not stripped. Aluminum - easy to strip, so hand tools only.
Lower 8 Screws
Wet zone. Replace with 1/4 in x 1 1/4 in stainless through-bolts. Washer goes on the back of the faceplate.
Reseal Sequence
| Step | Do this | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Waders or pump; tubs for fish and water; bail both boxes | Photograph frame rocks first |
| 2 | Remove hardware and the weir | Reuse top 4 only |
| 3 | Remove every factory aluminum anchor | Open holes, no leftover insert |
| 4 | Roots off, old silicone off, brush buildup, sponge, dry, primer | Liner dry before the bead |
| 5 | Confirm weir holes on the bottom; extra liner ready | Easy to invert with weir out |
| 6 | Pack holes, 1/2 in bead with the caulk gun | 3-5 min to all nuts seated |
| 7 | Fold liner off; top-right then top-left bolt | Do not let the liner contact the bed early |
| 8 | Washer on the back, nuts tight, 1 hour | Rebuild rocks from the photo |

The weir is off the plate. A technician orients the faceplate with the weir click-in holes at the top so the flap can hang down. What is the result?
You should reuse the screws that sat underwater if they look clean.
falseA lower factory insert is seized. A 1/4 in stainless bolt will still start in the remaining threads. What do you do?
Nice work!
