How It Works

A centrifugal pump moves water by spinning an impeller that flings liquid outward by centrifugal force, creating a low-pressure zone at the center that pulls more water in behind it. That only works if there is already liquid at the impeller - air is too thin for the same motion to lift a column of water up from pond level. Once a pump runs dry, the intake pipe fills with air and the pump cannot draw water up on its own. Manually introducing water at the pump end gives the impeller something to work with again; each on/off cycle pushes the remaining air pocket a little further back toward the pond until the whole line is liquid and the pump can hold true suction. Quick Sequence

Setup (one-time): fill buckets with pond water; close the intake valve; close the return line before lifting the lid; open the pump basket lid; fill the intake basket with pond water; put the lid back on; open the return line. Repeatable cycle: open the intake valve and immediately flip the pump on - same motion, do not wait, or the water drops back down the intake. Watch the intake: once it runs dry (no more water visible), shut the pump off and close the intake valve. Repeat the cycle until the intake runs solid water with no air - budget roughly 4 buckets total for a run like about 50 ft with an 18 inch drop to pond level. Faster option: install a hose adapter on the intake pipe and fill directly from a garden hose in one pass, skipping the repeated cycling.

Safety Tips

Brief dry-running during each cycle is expected and normal - that is the method. Do not let a cycle run dry for an extended period - risk of seal wear, overheating, and cavitation damage to the impeller; shut off as soon as you notice the intake has gone dry. Always close the return line before pulling the lid for a top-off, or the water already in the line drains straight back into the pump. Cap cycling at roughly 4-5 attempts - beyond that, repeated cycling will not fix a leak or valve problem, it just risks more dry-run wear.

Common Problems

Intake runs dry almost immediately every cycle - normal, this is how the method works, not a malfunction: keep repeating the cycle. Still not primed after 4-5 cycles - likely a suction-side air leak, failed foot or check valve, or dry-rotted lid O-ring rather than just lost prime: stop cycling, inspect suction-side fittings and unions for leaks and check the lid O-ring before continuing. Water drains back into the pump when removing the lid - the return line was left open before pulling the lid: always close the return line first. Pump loses prime again shortly after a successful priming - no foot or check valve holding water in the line between visits: consider recommending a foot valve or check valve install.

Field Reminders

Picture the whole intake pipe (pond to pump) as one long air bubble once it is run dry. The fix is a repeated cycle: close the intake valve, fill it with water, run the pump briefly to cavitate or pull air out, shut off, close the intake, repeat - each cycle pushes the air bubble a little further out until it is gone.

What is the core method for clearing an air bubble from a pump intake line?
